MORPHOLOGY

Ref. Roe K.E. 1967a. A revision of Solanum , section Brevantherum in North and Central America. Brittonia 19:353-373.

Solanum chiapasense Roe sp. Nov.

Arborescens; rami juniores granuloso-tomentosi, pilis multangulis et echinoideis;
folia integra, basi breve attenuata, saepe abrupta, et in petiolum anguste decurrentia; calycis lobi saepe inaequales; corolla exserta breviter ex calyce ante anthesin, alba vel violacea 12-17 mm diametro; ovarium pauce pilosum vel fere tomentosum.

Shrubs or small trees 1-4 m high, forming flat-topped spreading crowns; trunks to 8 cm in diam., bark greenish or yellowish brown. Young branches terete or longi¬tudinally angled and grooved, whitish to yellowish granular-tomentose, the hairs sessile and stalked, multangulate and echinoid. Leaves rather thin, ovate, lance¬ovate or broadly elliptic, the apices acute, attenuate or acuminate, the bases short attenuate, sometimes abruptly so, usually 13-33 cm long, 5-15 cm wide, scabridulous to velutinous above, the hairs spaced to overlapping, sessile and short, stout-stalked, porrect-stellate and multangulate: tomentose below. the hairs sessile and stalked, porrect-stellate, multangulate and echinoid: axillary leaves usually lacking or rare on mature plants. Inflorescences 8-14 cm long; peduncles unbranched for 4-10 cm, 2.5-4.5 mm thick, granular-tomentose, the hairs sessile and stalked, mult-angulate and echinoid; pedicels 2-6 mm long, pubescent, the hairs sessile and short-stalked, multangulate and echinoid. Flower buds subglobose to oblong at anthesis, tomentose. the hairs multangulate and echinoid, often appressed; calyx lobe sutures evident as lines of minute white hairs. Calyx lobed ½ way. the lobes acute to semi-ovate, often of unequal size, i.e. the calyx not split along all sutures, 1.4-4.3 mm long by 1.4-2.6 mm wide in flower, 2.0-5.6 mm by 2.6-4.4 mm in fruit, glabrous or with occasional simple or stellate hairs within. Corolla only weakly exserted from calyx at anthesis, white or violet, 12-17 mm across, the lobes with few simple or stellate hairs within. Anthers 3.1-4.7 mm long, inserted on corolla tube 1.7-1.9 mm above base, the filaments 1.4-1.6 mm long. Ovary sparingly to moderately pubescent. Style glabrous or with occasional stellate hairs on lower ½. Fruit 12-14 mm in diam., yellow when ripe. glabrescent. Seeds 1.7-2.4 mm long, 1.4-1.9 mm wide. Chromosome number: 2n = 24 (voucher: Roe, Roe & Moril 986).
Solanum chiapasense apparently is closely related to S. pulverulentifolium but can readily be distinguished by its dark green instead of whitish upper leaf surfaces, larger calyx lobes, and weaker corolla exsertion from the calyx at anthesis.

An unarmed shrub or small tree, 1-4 m. tall, the young branches stellate-pubescent, the hairs sessile and short stipitate-stellate, with few or many rays; leaves ovate, lanceolate-ovate or elliptic, mostly 12 -30 cm. long, 5-15 cm. wide, the apex acute to attenuate, the base attenuate, asperous to velutinous, the hairs simple and sessile-stellate, with few rays above, densely stellate-pubescent, the hairs sessile and short stipitate-stellate, with few or many rays below; petioles 2.5-8 cm. long; axillary leaves usually absent; inflorescence cymose, pseudoterminal, becoming lateral, dichotomously branched, long pedunculate, the peduncle 4-10 cm. long, the hairs sessile or stipitate-stellate, with many or few rays; pedicels 2-5 mm. long, pubescent, the stellate hairs with many or few rays; flower buds subglobose to oblong; calyx lobed to the middle, the lobes triangular to ovate, 1.5-4.3 mm. long, glabrous or occasionally pubescent within; corolla white or violet, the limb 12-20 mm. wide, parted to below the middle, the lobes 5-7.5 mm. long; filaments about 1.5 mm. long; anthers 3-4.5 mm. long; ovary pubescent; style glabrous or stellate-pubescent; fruit yellow, 12-14 mm. in diameter, glabrescent; seeds 1.7-2.5 mm. long.
